When you get to the section where you have to hop along a rolling hexagon, at the start will be a Bot using a pair of golden scissors inside a frame. This references Puppeteer, a 2013 PS3 game developed by SIE Japan Studio. The game takes place entirely within a stage, with main character Kutaro who uses Calibrus, a magic pair of scissors. Once you encounter the first Shock Walls, make your way South-East into a pink area filled with spider webs you can thrust through. At the end you’ll find an Artefact, as well as a Bot hanging upside-down from the ceiling by a web.

These are the icons for the Xross Media Bar, which debuted on the 2003 PSX console in Japan, but is more known for its use on the PSP, PS3 and on Bravia TVs. The logos are still in use today, with the exception of the old PSN logo. Another display you can unlock for the Labo area is a sign with the Sony Interactive Entertainment logo which, if punched three times, will drop down and reveal the Sony Computer Entertainment logo. This is the old name for Sony Interactive Entertainment, which changed to that name in 2016.

This is a reference to 1998’s Spyro the Dragon on PS1, developed by Insomniac Games. Spyro’s wings notably use the inaccurate anatomy present in the original game; later titles gave it correct bat anatomy. In the PlayStation Labo area is a Bot sadly trying to make sense of a pile of shapes. This is referencing PS4 launch title Knack, released in 2013 and developed by SCE Japan Studio. The shapes are what Knack is made of, and he was designed to showcase the power of the PlayStation 4 by being made up of thousands of objects. Once you get to the very top of Mt. Motherboard, on the right you can see a Bot in a white cloak fighting against the wind.

Look over the edge of the island to see a blue aura in the clouds. Some children might feel frustrated with different game levels or obstacles. Talk to them about recognising when it’s time to take a break and turn their attention somewhere else. Often, when they come back relaxed, they’re more likely to find success.

Astro’s Playroom

As should be evident, Kat has the ability to change the direction of gravity. In 2015, it was remastered on the PlayStation 4 by Bluepoint Games. At the end of the short side-path to the Multi-Tap, you’ll spot a Bot with a flashlight stalked by a Bot in a straw hat.

The smooth, 60-frames-per-second gameplay makes controlling Astro a real treat. While none of the sequences are terribly difficult, there’s enough of a challenge here to keep me busy for around six hours as I chase the Platinum Trophy. The fun is to explore locations, jump between platforms and perform simple puzzles. From time to time, we also find enemies that we can avoid or overpower with fast punches. Is improved force feedback and the same funny little collection of gyros and touchscreens carried over from the DualShock 4 really the next-gen difference? I’m not entirely sure, and it may well prove to be another false dawn that, like HD rumble on the Switch, is a pleasant addition that soon fades into the background.

At the very end of the level, turn around to find a Bot wearing a blue cap trying to crack a safe, who retreats when you get close. This is a reference the Sly Cooper franchise that first appeared in 2002 on PS2, developed by Sucker Punch.

Each of the four worlds are split up into four levels that are interconnected with each other. Two of these levels involve regular platforming whereas the other two involve a special power-up suit which makes use of the DualSense controller’s capabilities. Another example is the ball suit in which the player must swipe the touchpad to guide the ball.

Every function and feature of the controller gets a little time in the spotlight. Pervasive and distinct rumble effects steal the show, from the tiny sensation of Astro’s footsteps to thundering moments like an Indiana Jones-style boulder chase. The triggers offer resistance as you charge your jumps in a frog suit or operate the levers on a toy machine. Sliding your finger across the touchpad lets you direct your movement as you roll around in a ball.

To make it appear, you must stand on top of a big plant near the edge of the level, just behind the Bloodborne Hunter Bot. Collecting all the items feels like you’re a curator at a PlayStation museum. While Astro’s Playroom’s new update was subtle, Team Asobi and PlayStation have been promoting Astro Bot’s new free DLC content. The first two new levels launched on February 13 and 20, and a new level is to be added weekly until March 13. After completing all DLC levels, a new game mode called Time Attack will be available as well. It is unclear whether Astro’s Playroom will get more updates in the future, but it is likely that Astro Bot will, considering its incredible success.

That PS4 game was the sort of thing you boot up once, mess around with for 30 minutes, and then forget it exists. As LUCK8 can tell, there’s not much of a story with this game, but you don’t need a fully fleshed-out plot for this demo. Astro’s Playroom has you controlling one of the Astro Bots as you explore different areas to find artifacts. These aren’t just any items but other accessories and items from PlayStation’s history.

Go back along to the front of the blue pipes and the sandstorm, and this time, go along the outside on the right. Go past the PlayStation face button symbols in the sand, and punch the shell tucked away under the pipe towards the end. To solve the riddle, jump up to the circular platforms above this area, where on the far side, you’ll see a little clock on the column.
